Note
As a Canadian, watching Celine Dion being trotted out as an exemplar of French culture might be an easier pill to swallow if the Vancouver Olympics hadn’t gone with Nickleback.
THIS IS HOW YOU REMIND ME (of that time when Nickelback) THIS IS HOW YOU REMIND ME (played at the Winter Olympics closing ceremony in 2010)

Demain on verra.

Songs that I discovered very late (and some I rediscovered)
I turned on the TV to have something in be background while I did some stuff on my laptop today. Technically, I could've also had some background music on my laptop but then, it'd have gone too slow and I wanted to finish it quickly. Anyhow, Deadpool 2 was playing and even though I saw it ages ago when it came out I never took the time to properly listening to the some of the songs it had in it and it had two that have blown me away. There are more pop songs than rock, so if this not your cup of tea, feel free to skip it. Nevertheless, there are masterpieces that aren't rock songs that deserve all the kudos in the world too!
During the scene where Wade Wilson dies and reunites with Vanessa in heaven the song Take On Me by a-ha comes on, but it was a complete different version! At first, I thought it was done by another band/singer, but nope, the same band made a new version back in 2017 of the original one, and I just discovered it 🤣! It's a slower version of the original, an unplugged version of it, and it hits completely different than the original one and it's even more beautiful. Here's the full song live!
The second one, was expressly done for the movie and Céline Dion was asked to sign/perform it and I'm very glad they choose her because it's a masterpiece that hits very close to home and I'll carry this song with me forever. The song is Ashes with an astonishing performance by Céline Dion. Just a small heads up, from 0:52 the video, gets very Deadpool style, especially the ending, and no, Ryan Reynolds wasn't the one dancing in the video.
youtube
Lyrics:
What's left to say? These prayers ain't working anymore Every word shot down in flames What's left to do with these broken pieces on the floor? I'm losing my voice calling on you
'Cause I've been shaking I've been bending backwards till I'm broke Watching all these dreams go up in smoke
Let beauty come out of ashes Let beauty come out of ashes And when I pray to God all I ask is Can beauty come out of ashes?
Can you use these tears to put out the fires in my soul? 'Cause I need you here, woah
'Cause I've been shaking I've been bending backwards till I'm broke Watching all these dreams go up in smoke
Let beauty come out of ashes Let beauty come out of ashes And when I pray to God all I ask is Can beauty come out of ashes? Can beauty come out of ashes?
After listening to this song like three dozen times, I relistened to old songs of hers and ended up listening to one with Andrea Bocelli, which is a wonderful Italian opera singer. The song is The Prayer and went on to the song Time To Say Goodbye with Andrea and Sarah Brightman, even though the title might sound sad the song is anything but sad! It's about two lovers embarking on a journey together as one (the song title in Italian is "I will leave with you"). They're saying goodbye to their loved ones as they begin a new life together as one.
Furthermore, I read about the illness she's currently battling and watched a video on her YouTube channel and I can't remember seeing an artist so open and emotional on a video while having to inform the world about their condition and cancel a whole tour because of it - you can find the video here if you're interested in watching it. I just wish her all the best and hope from the bottom of my heart that she can go back to doing what she loves the most - it's difficult and rare to find something you love only to have to stop doing it because you're sick. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Recommend queer books for my 30 books in November challenge!
I want to read 30 books in November and I'd love to add more queer fiction to my list.
I'd especially like anything released in the last five years. Graphic novels are very welcome (for when I need something lighter), and I'll also take Snowbaz recs of at least 40k (for the same reason, but only two or three and ideally lesser-know/actiony/magic mishap). Please make suggestions and reblog!
I'll aim to post short reviews as I go to keep me accountable. If anyone's curious, I've included the tbr books I already own and could be reading below the cut (not all queer).
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan
In Memoriam by Alice Winn
Penance by Eliza Clark
All For The Game by Nora Sakavic (currently reading first book)
The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson
Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin
The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier
Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler
The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin
Heartstopper Vol 2 onwards
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey
Camp! by Paul Baker
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White
All That's Left in the World by Erik J. Brown
Pride by Tim Tate
Dark Rise bt C. S. Pacat
Breathe by Tim Winton
Only the Ocean by Natasha Carthew
Undercurrent by Natasha Carthew
Amy Falls Down by Jincy Willett
The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab
The Wager by Dion Graham
The Family by Ed Sanders

by Dion J. Pierre
A mob of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) members has taken over the Westlands administrative building at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and vowed not to surrender it unless school officials adopt the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel.
The action, the first of its kinds since the spring “uprising” of encampments on colleges across the US, appears to have been precipitated by the college’s declining to accept SJP’s divestment recommendations — which aim to compromise Israel’s national security and leave the world’s lone Jewish state vulnerable to jihadist extremists.
“Westlands is occupied,” SJP said in a series of statements published on Instagram on Thursday. “Students have occupied Westlands to demand immediate action on the genocide of Palestinians. Administration has failed to meet our disclosure deadline. Westland residents are safe: they can come and go at will. We need your support: Walkout to the south lawn, bring food donations, sign divestment proposal.”
SJP also called on students to obstruct justice, imploring them to amass “as many bodies blocking doors as possible” and instructing them to wear “mask [sic] and indiscernible clothing, hats, scarves, etc to support the student intifada.” Since then, National Students for Justice in Palestine (NSJP), which coordinates activities at individual colleges, has cheered the insurrectionist behavior, using the same incendiary language as the students.
NSJP further urged the students to “bring keffiyehs, noise makers, and flags.”
Photos published by SJP show its members tied together on the floor to prevent being detained by the police and posing next to a large banner on which the phrase Dar al Fayoumi is written. Purportedly the name of a casualty of the Israel-Hamas war, SJP proclaimed that it is the new name of Westlands. Additionally, various social media reports by groups such as FreedomNews.tv, reported on Thursday that they have also set up an encampment outside the building.

Lingthusiasm Episode 87: If I were an irrealis episode
Language lets us talk about things that aren't, strictly speaking, entirely real. Sometimes that's an imaginative object (is a toy sword a real sword? how about Excalibur?). Other times, it's a hypothetical situation (such as "if it rains, we'll cancel the picnic" - but neither the picnic nor the rain have happened yet. And they might never happen. But also they might!). Languages have lots of different ways of talking about different kinds of speculative events, and together they're called the irrealis.
In this episode, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne get enthusiastic about some of our favourite examples under the irrealis umbrella. We talk about various things that we can mean by "reality", such as how existing fictional concepts, like goblins playing Macbeth, differ from newly-constructed fictions, like our new creature the Frenumblinger. We also talk about hypothetical statements using "if" (including the delightfully-named "biscuit conditionals), and using the "if I were a rich man" (Fiddler on the Roof) to "if I was a rich girl" (Gwen Stefani) continuum to track the evolution of the English subjunctive. Finally, a few of our favourite additional types of irrealis categories: the hortative, used to urge or exhort (let's go!), the optative, to express wishes and hopes (if only...), the dubitative, for when you doubt something, and the desiderative (I wish...).

Announcements:
Thank you to everyone who shared Lingthusiasm with a friend or on social media for our seventh anniversary! It was great to see what you love about Lingthusiasm and which episodes you chose to share. We hope you enjoyed the warm fuzzies!
In this month’s bonus episode, Gretchen gets enthusiastic about swearing (including rude gestures) in fiction with science fiction and fantasy authors Jo Walton and Ada Palmer, authors of the Thessaly books and Terra Ignota series, both super interesting series we've ling-nerded out about before on the show. We talk about invented swear words like "frak" and "frell", sweary lexical gaps (why don't we swear with "toe jam!"), and interpreting the nuances of regional swear words like "bloody" in fiction.
